April 27, 1916

April 27. Arrive at Lucheux at 10.30.am. This
is a fair sized village on the side of a hill with
forest of Lucheux on two sides. On top of hill is
an old castle built by the English in 1100, partly
in ruins, and part still used as residence, in which
ambulance is established. It is reached by a
very steep road up from the town, and under
a big gate and archway. Grounds are very pretty
and separated from town on one side and forest on
other by a great wall and rampart. There is an old
watch tower in our corner.
