Aug 8. Aft. another heavy shelling by Bosch. Got
a fair number of wounded last two days and nights.
One stretcher and four bearers blown up by shell
just after leaving aid post.
[The ‘Intermediate Trench’ or ‘Line’ was a trench occupied uniquely by both German and British. A barrier was put up by the Germans called ‘The Block’ to separate the two forces. During the week many attempts were made to capture the German occupied part of the trench with bombing parties (grenades) and hand-to-hand fighting. The 11th Warwickshire Regiment War Diary indicates that the 6th Bedford’s attacked the Intermediate Trench on the evening of 8th August at 9-30pm just after dark, with 83 casualties. Lt. Elliott would have been busy taking casualties from this action over the next few days.]
