January 12, 1916

Jan.12. Sick parade in Aid-post dugout. Then to A.D.S.
and went with McCarden to a 4.2. How. Battery just
behind, which was in action. Then went into
trenches to a part called the ‘Grouse-Butt’. where
a man had been wounded in the head. Had
to cross open ground 200 yes from German trenches
and heard bullets whistle by for the first time.

[4.2 How. Battery = 4.2 inch Howitzer Battery]

[‘Grouse Butt’ is in fact 37 yards from the German front line trench.]
