Acting as Town Major while Lt. Carnell on
leave – Have to inspect estaminets, arrange
billets for passing units; arrange trains for
watering horses – and look after water supply
and sign passes for inhabitants – and also to
run a fire brigade.

Town Major – A British Army Town Major was responsible for liaison between the civilian authorities and the military.
