November 23, 1916

Nov.23. 6.a.m. Battalion relieved and marched out in pouring rain to Hamel where we breakfasted in open, then along roads knee deep in mud and water to Mailly-Maillet and billeted in ruined house by 4 p.m. Got a large fire going and had lunch then hot baths and shave – the first wash for 13 days.
Then tea and bed all in one room with stone floor and no door or windows – but a large fire and blankets and over coats.
